Southern Pride 4-H Club March Meeting

On March 1st, 2011 the Southern Pride 4-H club held their regular scheduled monthly meeting. The meeting has held at the Rockhill/Orbisonia Fire Hall. The meeting was called to order by President Katie Anderson. Pledges were led by Chance and Scotty Goshorn. Roll call was taken by News Reporter Gracie Long and the Secretary report was read by Vice President Liz Scott. Treasure Derrick Cramer gave the treasures report.
Under Old business: The tour to Brennemans Meat Market in January was well attended and members learned several meat cuts and how meat is processed. The Roller skating party held in February was attended by 30 members and family and all that attended had a wonderful time. Leader Carrie Anderson reminded all new members and members that have not signed up for their club project books to please sign up tonight. Also, sign up sheets for club T-shirts, Share-A-Project, and New Member contact information is available. Under New Business: The Ham Sandwich sale orders and money were to be turned in to Shannon or Lori Cramer at the club meeting. Delivery is scheduled for March 30th and details for pick up will be announced at a later date. The club toured K Bar K farm in Petersburg, March 5th all sheep project members attended and learned a lot. Community service project for the club is Adopt-A-Highway and it is scheduled for March 26th, plan on meeting in Shade Gap and 10:00 a.m. Leader Carrie Anderson reminded the club that each member must attend a minimal of 5 club meetings to participate and show at the Huntingdon County Fair. Club T-shirts and Teen Leader T-shirts were handed out. Dates set for the following projects are Flower Arranging, meet at Precious Petals April 5th at 5:15, Ceramics meet at TK Custom Ceramic Shop, Mapleton March 21st 6 -7 p.m. and for Scrap booking and Photography the club will be going to Sarah Books April 12th at 6p.m. A Dairy Beef calf was donated by Doug and Angie Parsons, all proceeds will be donated to the club. A special thank to Rebecca Parsons and Gracie Long who will be feeding, training and working with this calf. Jon and Jennifer Goshorn announced that they have project pigs for sale, any members interested in purchasing please see Jon or Jennifer. After the business portion of the meeting member Gracie Long shared her Bug project and members Shavonna Fegan and Keith Anderson did a presentation on Market and Breeding Sheep Projects. The club then split into groups to work on Livestock Projects. Game Leader Orion Sarra had a special Leprechaun Game and the Parsons and Long families provided a special St. Patrick’s Day themed snack. Meeting was adjourned by President Katie Anderson. The next scheduled meeting will be April 5th, 6:30 at the Orbisonia/Rockhill Fire Company.

On Saturday March 5th, members of the Southern Pride 4-H club attended a tour of K Bar K farm in Petersburg, PA. The farm is owed and operated by Ken and Kathy Soder and son Nathan. To begin the tour the club first learned about the Registered Polled Dorset breed of sheep. The Soders raise pure breed Dorset sheep that are usually raised for a meat product. Because of the unique reproductive genetic practices and quality of the breed, most of the ewes and rams on the Soder farm are used as breeding stock rather than meat. A very unique and rare (to this area) method of reproduction is practiced at the Soder farm. The method that is practiced is artificial insemination; the semen used for breeding came from Brittan. Many of the Dorset sheep on the farm are 50% British and very true to the original breed. The club also learned about feed management. Kathy and Ken talked to the club about the farms feeding practices and the difference between feeding a market sheep or a breeding sheep. Also, how sheep in comparison to other animals graze, and that sheep are very selective about grazing pasture. The club also toured the sheep barn and was able to see lambing pens that are called “jugs”. Ken explained how each ewe would spend 24 -48 hours in a lambing jug to help the ewe and lamb bond, before returning them to pasture. Because of the reproductive method used, 80 of the ewes are expecting lambs all within a week. The Soder family will be very busy lambing in the next 5 to 7 days. Southern Pride would like to thank the Soder family for taking the time to talk to the 4-H members and share their sheep farm knowledge.

Southern Pride 4-H Enjoys Roller Skating

The Southern Pride 4H Club enjoyed a night of roller skating on February 26 at the Blue Mountain Skating Rink in Roxbury. Members skated to the Chicken Dance and the Limbo. There was also girls only and boys only skating under the sparkling disco ball. Members participating included (in no particular order) Savanna, Shyanne and Keith Sunderland, Kolyan Parsons, Joce Whitsel, Savanna Whitsel, Katie and Keith Anderson, Lexie and Mason Parks, Morgan Cornelius, Brock, Blake, and Camden Woodward, DeShane, Scott, and Chance Goshorn, Gracie Long, Hannah, Paige, Alison, and Rebecca Parsons, Curtis Starr, Taylor Maslanik, Trevor Duvall, Derrick and Garret Cramer, Shavonna Fegan, Brandon Bream, Kendra Parsons, and Madalyn Cisney and many other family members and friends.

Trough Creek Community Adventurers 4-H Club

The Trough Creek Community Adventurers 4-H Club held a meeting at the United Methodist Church in Cassville on January 17, 2011. The meeting was started by new club president Cora Waite. A workshop on market beef and goat body parts was instructed by club leader Jodi Cresswell.
Club members recapped on the holiday deliveries of cookies and Christmas cards to the Cassville community residents. The fleece throws made by members in November where donated to the Home for the Ageing. The club Christmas party held in December was enjoyed by all.
Club officers and leaders met in December to organize the clubs calendar of events for the 2011 4-H year. The list of monthly events was handed to all members in attendance. Club members where reminded of the April 1 deadline for the online e-data 4-H enrollment. Jessica and Jaymee Heeter updated us on their class placing at the 2011 Farm Show in Harrisburg, PA. Jessica Heeter placed 2nd with a Senior 3 year old Milking Short Horn, 1st with a Junior 2 year old Milking Short Horn and was awarded Reserve Champion in the Youth Division. Jaymee Heeter placed 2nd in a winter yearling open class and 2nd in her Youth Division.
Penn State Lady Lions 4-H day is scheduled for January 30, anyone interested in tickets are to contact the Huntingdon County Extension Office. A club family fun night is being planned for February 26, 2011 at the Holiday Bowl in Huntingdon. Members and their family need to sign up at the February meeting to ensure we reserve enough lanes. An Alpaca project meeting will be held at the Terrace Mt. Alpaca Farm on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 11:00 am.
A project education day was held on Sunday, January 23 at the United Methodist Church in Cassville. Members in attendance worked in small groups with a goat learning lab.
The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 14 at the United Methodist Church in Cassville, starting at 6:30 pm.

On Saturday January 29th The Southern Pride 4-H Club took a tour of Brenneman’s Meat Market in Huntingdon. The members that attended learned various steps in the processing of Beef, Swine, Sheep and Goats. Mr. Brenneman also showed the members different meat cuts and average costs and prices of the cuts. After the tour Mr. Brenneman shared seasoned beef sticks as a snack for each of the members. The club would like to Thank Mr. Brenneman and his staff for taking time to give the tour.

Huntingdon County 4-H Beef Club

On January 19, 2011 the 4H Beef Club held their monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. At the Extension Office. Hayden Kramer led the American pledge and Brooke Emery led the 4H pledge. Allie Miller read the secretary's report. Our treasurer wasn't there so there was no treasurer report. President Kelsey Dysard brought up community service project. A committee was formed. The members are Austin Harnish, Jordan Harnish, Allie Miller, Brooke Emery, Kelsey Dysard. The committee will be early to the next meeting to discuss their community service project. Under New Business the club discussed Farm Show and if anyone attended. 4-H Camp counselors are wanted; ages 15 and up. 4-H week is March 13-19. 4-H'ers are encouraged to promote Huntingdon County 4-H. The news reporter will be writing a short article to put in the paper. On January 30th at 2:00 will be the Lady Lions 4-H Game. Tickets are free at the Extension Office but supplies are limited. The club will be giving a donation for 5 years to the 4-H Endowment Fund. The club fundraiser will be ham and cheese sandwiches. There was a presentation done by Scott Brown. The meeting was adjourned by Brooke Emery and second by Austin Harnish. The next meeting will be February 16th at 7:30 p.m. In the Extension Office.

Southern Pride 4-H Has A Successful Fundraiser

The Southern Pride 4H club recently held a ham and cheese sandwich sale. Orders were taken from October through November. At the November meeting, members gathered to make the sandwiches to fill the orders. Over 800 sandwiches were made in a time period of an hour and a half. Everybody worked very hard for this fundraiser. Due to the terrific teamwork of the club, this was a successful sandwich sale.

4-H HOOFPRINTERS 4-H CLUB

On January 17, 2011, the 4-H Hoofprinters Club met at the Huntingdon County Extension Office. The club discussed their food bank project and continuing it every month. In early April, the club is planning a trip to the PSU barns and seeing this year's foals. Jean Peters, a 4-H leader, announced important dates to the club including County Round-Up, August 20th and Districts, September 17th and 18th at the Huntingdon Fairgrounds. Jessica Mills presented a program about Driving and the positive, fun aspects of it. The next meeting will be held on February 21, 2011 at 6:30pm at the Huntingdon County Extension Office.

Piney Ridge 4-H Club

Piney Ridge 4-H members did several community service activities over the past few months. We visited the Humane Society in November, where we gave a donation and then played with the animals.

On November 27th, we gathered at the Book Store Plaza to ring the bell for the Salvation Army.

December 5th found the 4-H'ers at DeForrest Apartments making fruit trays. After making the fruit trays, we went around the apartments singing Christmas Carols and delivering the fruit to the residents.

The next meeting for Piney Ridge 4-H will be at the Extension Office Meeting room on Tuesday, January 11, 2011, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. We will be welcoming the newly elected officers and planning activities for the year.

The Trough Creek Community Adventurers 4-H Club held a meeting at the United Methodist Church in Cassville on Monday, November 8, 2010. The meeting started with the reopening of officer nominations, followed by the election of the 2011 TCCA 4-H Club Officers. The elections results are as follows: President – Cora Waite, Vice President – Jessica Heeter, Secretary – Abbey Cresswell, Treasurer – Kayla Morgan, Historian – Natalee Buckley, Recreational Leaders – Tommy Zinobile and Katrina Bliss.
A report on the 4-H awards banquet was given for members who were unable to attend. Awards and project books were also returned to members. Shelly Waite spoke with the members regarding the 2011 4-H online e-data registration. A pizza party in January will be given if all club members complete the online registration by January 1, 2011. Tag day for the 2011 market steer projects is set for Saturday, November 20, 2010 from 8:00-11:00 am at the Huntingdon County Fair Grounds.
The clubs Christmas wreath fund raiser is in progress. Delivery is scheduled for Saturday, December 4, 2010. A committee for the clubs 2011 calendar of events was discussed and formed of the 2011 officers and several leaders. A meeting for the committee will be held before the end of the year.
Members got together on Sunday, November 14, 2010 to work on community service projects. Members donated fleece material and made throws to be given out over the Holidays. Any member wishing to donate material or completed throws can still do so at the December meeting. Members also wrote letters of thanks to military service men and women to be distributed over the Holidays.
A club Christmas party is schedule for Monday, December 13, 2010 at the United Methodist Church, starting at 6:30 pm. Members are asked to bring Christmas cookies and Christmas card for the evening activities. Family members are welcome to stay and participate.

Southern Pride 4-H Club

The Southern Pride 4H club gathered for their annual banquet on October 17, 2010 at the Saltillo Community Building.

Carrie Anderson opened with a welcome to everyone and announcements. The group was then lead in the pledges and prayer followed by a covered dish meal. The Shannon Cramer family donated roasted pork.

Award presentations were made. All 45 members of the club received certificates of participation. Some other awards given included Parent of the year (Angela Parsons), Outstanding Volunteer (Jessica Whitsel), 35 years of service (John Goshorn), Friend of 4H (Linda Miller of Precious Petals & gifts), and The 4H Golden Award (Katie Anderson).

Outstanding 4H awards were presented for Little Clover Girl (Jocelynn Whitsel), Little Clover Boy (Scotty Goshorn), Junior Girl (Elizabeth Scott), Junior Boy (Derrick Cramer), Senior Girl (Amanda Fisher), Outstanding Girl (Kalee Anderson), and Outstanding Boy (Dane Woodward).

The evening concluded with a slide show presentation of the club's accomplishments over the past year by Jessica Whitsel.

Raystown Rabbit Ranchers 4-H Club

At our recent meeting new officers where elected. They are President - Brooke Emery, Vice President - Michaela Smith, Secretary - Sarah Jefferis, Treasurer - Jesse Jefferis, Historian - William Emery & Paige Bousum, News Reporter - Emily Jefferis and Game Leaders - Jared Smith, Halee Smith and Jordin Harnish.

On October 17th the Raystown Ranchers along with friends and family went to JB Tree Farm for a fun filled afternoon. They went on a hay ride, walked through the corn maze and then roasted hot dogs and marshmallows over and open fire.

The next meeting will be Saturday, November 13, 2010.

Trough Creek Community Adventurers 4-H Club

The Trough Creek Community Adventurers 4-H Club participated in the Huntingdon Halloween Parade on Monday, October 25 and the Mt. Union Halloween Parade on Thursday, October 28, 2010. This years float theme was "Let your Pumpkin grow with 4-H". The float was decorated as a pumpkin patch with 4-H members dressing up as scarecrows to protect their pumpkins.

Southern Pride 4H has Busy Parade week
Members of Southern Pride 4H Participated in both the Mount Union and Three Springs Halloween parades. Members threw candy and glow-in-the dark bouncy balls to parade onlookers. The float was decorated in a farm theme. Members sat upon haybales and wore visors representing various types of animals found on the farm. The float was also decorated in green and white lights and included a miniature John Deere tractor and red barn. Large farm tractors driven by Curtis Starr and Dane Woodward followed the float in the Mount Union parade. Members attending one or both parades included the John Goshorn family, Jon Whitsel family, The Woodward family, Shannon Cramer family, Wayne Anderson family, Robyn Gaff family, Trevor Duvall, Taylor Maslanik, Brandon Beam, Gracie Long, and Shavonna Fegan.

Minnie Whinnies Model Horse 4-H Club

Minnie Whinnies held their August meeting on Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at the Huntingdon County Fair. They completed an exercise in writing down as many horse colors and breeds as they could think of. Then they went on a tour of the horse barns and found more to write down. The exercise helped them learn many new different breeds and some rare colors like a grulla appaloosa, a perlino paint, and a champagne appaloosa.

Minnie Whinnies held their September meeting on Sunday, September 19, 2010, at the Extension Office. A short business meeting was held before a model horse show. The members showed their models and were able to borrow up to two additional models from the leaders in order to have two entries in each class. Members had a lot of fun winning candy bars for prizes and trying to pick their next winner. The judge picked a grand and reserve from the winners of the divisions. The grand for the day went to Heather Rearick who won a model horse blanket embroidered with “Minnie Whinnies”. The reserve for the day went to Carly Rudy who won a small model horse.

Minnie Whinnies held their October meeting on Sunday, October 17, 2010, at the Extension Office. After a short business meeting, members chose their project kit for the upcoming year. The kits will be ordered and should arrive in time for the next meeting. In addition to their project kits, members will be making a “trail” obstacle. Some examples offered were a bridge, a mailbox, a jump, a hedge or flower jump, etc. In the next few months, members can be looking for items that may be used for this project.

The next meeting will be Sunday, November 21, 2010, from 2 – 4 p.m., at the Extension Office. Club officers will be elected at this meeting. New members are welcome to come to any meeting which are held on the third Sunday of each month.

Southern Pride 4-H Club Celebrates National 4-H Week

Southern Pride 4-H Club Members: Brandon Beam, Kalee Anderson, Katie Anderson, Camden Woodward, Elizabeth Scott and Keith Anderson.

The Southern Pride 4-H club was excited to share and celebrate National 4-H week October 3rd -9th. Several of the club members visited all four of the Elementary Schools in Southern Huntingdon County on Friday October the 8th. The reason for their visit was to share the meaning of the 4-H program and also to educate the grade school students about what 4-H is. At each grade school Leader Carrie Anderson spoke to students about National 4-H week and how children and youth ages 8-18 can get involved. Carrie stressed the importance of finding the right club to join by selecting a project and then finding a club close to their home. Huntingdon County has a wide variety of clubs offering several projects from Livestock, to gardening, to small crafts. Parent Volunteer Jessica Whitsel prepared a mini slide show for students to view while members explained and talked about projects and skills learned. The slide show had pictures of Community Service project (adopt-a-highway), Community awareness (parades) and pictures of several members with their club projects at the fair. Member Kalee Anderson spoke to students about the 4 leaf clover with the four H’s meaning Head, Hands, Heart, and Health. Kalee also talked about the club pledge and its meaning, of being involved with our community and youth. Members Elizabeth Scott and Camden Woodward spoke to students about leading meetings and being an officer of the club. They explained their duties as officers and that the club is run and decisions are made by the members/youth. Member Brandon Beam explained and talked about his Dairy Beef project. He talked to the students about what he needed to care for his livestock project and how he got involved at the Fairground with cleaning the barns and getting involved with community projects. Members Katie and Keith Anderson showed students some other options for projects other than livestock. Katie talked about her sewing projects and the club Motto, “To make the Best Better”. Keith Anderson showed the students his ceramic projects. Keith also talked about his sheep project and how he can use the wool for a non-livestock project in making wool items and crafts. Kalee Anderson also shared her floral arrangement project and explained different options for that project. At each of the four Grade schools Elementary students that are members of the Southern Pride 4-H Club had the opportunity to share their 4-H experience and projects. From Spring Farms School the following members shared projects, Hanna Booher – flowers; Brooks Walker and Mckenzie Yohn – Rabbits; Kolton Gaff – Sports Fishing and Mikara Anderson – Vet Science and Public Speaking. Trough Creek – Joce Whitsel – Computer Science, Forestry, Family Strengths and Rabbits; Raven Booher – Goats and new member Sarah Morris will be doing sewing projects. Rockhill – Chance and Scotty Goshorn shared about Swine and Dairy Cows. Shade Gap - Rebecca Parsons – shared what equipment you would see at the fair to get a Dairy cow ready for show ; Shavonna Fegan – Sheep and her experiences the past year as a member and new member Paige Parsons will be doing Dairy and Rabbits.
