On May 15th, Keith Anderson and Jocelynn Whitsel attended the 4-H Forestry Field Days at Laurel Haven Conservation Center in Julian, PA. The youth were introduced to the skills that foresters use on the job. They spent a block of time during the morning comparing a variety of products and how they are related to wood or wood products. The next session involved learning how a forester measures distance and learning to use a compass. After they learned these two basic steps, they were then able to plot out an area similar to a boundary line. After lunch they set out on a hike, they learned how to identify four different trees, saw a ruffed grouse, and checked out the area where the older kids were competing and what their competition included. The day came to a close with a presentation on charcoal making and an awards ceremony. Jocelynn said her favorite part of the day was "when we learned how to use a compass." Keith's favorite for the day was "learning how to identify trees and the hike when we saw the ruffed grouse."
