Minnie Whinnies Model Horse 4-H Club

Minnie Whinnies held their August meeting on Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at the Huntingdon County Fair. They completed an exercise in writing down as many horse colors and breeds as they could think of. Then they went on a tour of the horse barns and found more to write down. The exercise helped them learn many new different breeds and some rare colors like a grulla appaloosa, a perlino paint, and a champagne appaloosa.

Minnie Whinnies held their September meeting on Sunday, September 19, 2010, at the Extension Office. A short business meeting was held before a model horse show. The members showed their models and were able to borrow up to two additional models from the leaders in order to have two entries in each class. Members had a lot of fun winning candy bars for prizes and trying to pick their next winner. The judge picked a grand and reserve from the winners of the divisions. The grand for the day went to Heather Rearick who won a model horse blanket embroidered with “Minnie Whinnies”. The reserve for the day went to Carly Rudy who won a small model horse.

Minnie Whinnies held their October meeting on Sunday, October 17, 2010, at the Extension Office. After a short business meeting, members chose their project kit for the upcoming year. The kits will be ordered and should arrive in time for the next meeting. In addition to their project kits, members will be making a “trail” obstacle. Some examples offered were a bridge, a mailbox, a jump, a hedge or flower jump, etc. In the next few months, members can be looking for items that may be used for this project.

The next meeting will be Sunday, November 21, 2010, from 2 – 4 p.m., at the Extension Office. Club officers will be elected at this meeting. New members are welcome to come to any meeting which are held on the third Sunday of each month.

Southern Pride 4-H Club

On May 15th, Keith Anderson and Jocelynn Whitsel attended the 4-H Forestry Field Days at Laurel Haven Conservation Center in Julian, PA. The youth were introduced to the skills that foresters use on the job. They spent a block of time during the morning comparing a variety of products and how they are related to wood or wood products. The next session involved learning how a forester measures distance and learning to use a compass. After they learned these two basic steps, they were then able to plot out an area similar to a boundary line. After lunch they set out on a hike, they learned how to identify four different trees, saw a ruffed grouse, and checked out the area where the older kids were competing and what their competition included. The day came to a close with a presentation on charcoal making and an awards ceremony. Jocelynn said her favorite part of the day was "when we learned how to use a compass." Keith's favorite for the day was "learning how to identify trees and the hike when we saw the ruffed grouse."

We also may have a raffle. We are promotion 4-H at the Bean Soup Festival in McClure in September. Zach McKeehan led us in the 4-H Pledge. The American Pledge was led by Gavi Walker. We talked about having another fundraiser but we decided to discuss the details at the next meeting. We had so much fun at the Shirley Home for our last community service project, that we are thinking of doing it again. Our 4-H picnic this year will be held in July. the perfect month to have a picnic don't you think? Clean up is going to be held July 31st. On September 18, we are showing other kids the joy of being in 4-H at the McClure Bean Soup Festival. Our group is so excited to do this because everyone knows the thrill of when they first partidpated in a show and joined a club who enjoyed the same things they do. I know I would like nothing more than to help another kid feel the same feeling I had when I first joined. Who knows, maybe people who are not thinking about it will be inspired and join. Anyway, we have decided to have soup sale in the fall. When the meeting ended, Gavi adjourned the meeting and Kody Harshberger seconded it.
